From Russia with love..
Three species of birds, the Curlow Sandpiper, Sanderling and Knot fly 15000km every year from Russia and Europe to come and breed in the West Coast National Park and around Geelbek Restaurant. They are called our Russian double agents.
If 30 000 of these birds choose The West Coast National Park as their number one destination, why not you?
A hidden treasure
The vegetation looks like dull bushes, but 44% of our plant species are found only in this area and are of medicinal value. The Khoi used these plants in their daily households and for medicine. We are cooking and experimenting with these plants and have been very creative with it.
Our gift to the world is the Red Malva ( Pelargonium fulgidum). Exported to Europe made it into a household plant in Europe
Afrikaans and local names are given to some of these plants like Koekemakranka, Skilpadbessie,Sandpypie,Bobbejaantjies,Rooi Kalkoentjie,Geel Sterretjie,Vetkousie,Snotrosie and many more.
